Rags, Cloth and Thread November 11, 2006

Rags are generally useless
just some worn out clothes
but sometimes they are recycled
into some handy throws.
In days gone quilts kept you warm
and drove away the cold
nothing fancy to envy
mostly cloth memories to hold.
Some quilts made in the early days
showed off fancy stitches
those young girls teasing with their skills
to find a man with riches.
I never really understood
the wisdom at that time
for just because she could stitch
would not necessarily make her prime.
Most quilts begin with purchased cloth
from forays to many shops
fabric that takes your breath away
is picked for all those tops.
You generally have color favorites
or maybe a specific theme
however started from simple beginnings
the journey stays quite supreme.
Some quilts require lots of work
some get done with ease
both will be a work of art
and can show off expertise.
I’ve seen a quilt with flowers
I’ve seen a quilt with frogs
I’ve seen them with fuzzy cats
and cheerful playing dogs.
There is no subject foreign
there is no way just right
each is an individual trip
to give the maker pure delight.
Some are done in a weekend
some take many years
some require advanced skill
and generate many tears.
The journey to the ending
is often met with flaws
regardless how much you plan
certain areas give you pause.
The excitement in the beginning
can lead to boredom in the end
it’s those side trips in the middle
that makes the quilt now your best friend.
The best part of a quilt
is it’s snuggle factor
to wrap yourself in love and warmth
is the best kind of reactor.
Some quilts are sheer works of art
and should remain upon a wall
some are dragged around the house
by children very small.
Some are large and some are small
with many sizes in between
some are silk and velvet
while some just former jeans.
Colors dancing in your mind
fabric running through your hand
mind and skill become one
as cloth turns into something grand.
The value is in the feeling
and the memories sewn inside
there is no amount of money
that can buy that kind of pride.
What began as just a thought
and started with so much fun
with the problems along the way
there is no feeling as good as done.
I hold the copyright on all my works.
